Weathering steel is usually referred to by its trademark name COR-TEN (or simply Corten) and is known for its superior corrosion resistance and thickness. It's a common mis conception that the rusting metal means it is deterioting however that isn't the case.
Corten forms a protective oxide layer when exposed to the elements and while it may take on a weathered appearance the steel is actually forming a protective surface on itself which continues to regenerate over years.
